Adults on ice in Oberstdorf: stories and dreams from around the world
Adults on Ice in Oberstdorf: Stories and Dreams from Around the World
Every year, the small German town of Oberstdorf becomes the beating heart of international adult figure skating. The ISU Adult Competitions—now an unmissable event for those who continue to pursue their passion for the ice well beyond their youth—bring together skaters from all over the world, united by a shared enthusiasm and a desire to challenge themselves.
In this edition, the ice welcomed performances from skaters of all backgrounds: former competitors, late starters, coaches, and dreamers alike—each with a story to tell. We gathered a few short interviews with participants from different countries to give voice to a world full of determination, emotion, and the true spirit of sport.

MICKAEL – Great Britain
What was the most exciting or emotional moment of this edition of OBI?
I hesitate between my free skate and the pairs free. It’s hard to choose—both made me so happy. My free skate was the first time I ever felt so free. I enjoyed every second and felt like I was doing a show. The pairs free was the result of all the hard work Michelle and I put in, and we had never managed to skate it well until that day. It was so intense, and sharing it with someone was amazing.
What will you take away from this experience?
I’ll take away the feeling that no matter what happens in life, OBI is where the magic happens. It’s the people there. You rediscover your true love for skating, and dreams really do come true.
ENRICO – Indonesia
What was the most exciting or emotional moment of this edition of OBI?
The most exciting moment of OBI 2025 was simply being in Oberstdorf in person. This time, I didn’t just watch the competition via online streaming—I was actually there. Seeing Oberstdorf with my own eyes was incredibly special because I could experience adult skaters gliding, jumping, and spinning right in front of me. Witnessing their performances live was deeply emotional and inspiring. Even though I came as a non-competitor, it was still magical.
What will you take away from this experience?
Without a doubt, I’ll take away many unforgettable memories. I had the chance to meet amazing people from around the world—people from different countries and backgrounds who all share the same passion for skating. It was easy to connect because we all love the same thing. Everyone supported and uplifted each other. Even though I wasn’t a competitor this time, but a coach, I was still deeply inspired by the adult skaters. Watching them made me truly believe that age is just a number, and that you can always do what you love—no matter what.

Incredibile!

What was the most exciting or emotional moment of this edition of OBI?
Competing in Oberstdorf this year was very different for me. I came with a lot of hope to do well and show my progress to my friends. However, being in the arena made me very sad, as it reminded me of a coach from my club who passed away in the AA5342 plane crash, along with his wife and other club members I knew well. This coach used to come to OBI for the Nebelhorn Trophy, as his son usually participated in that event.
My artistic program for this year was changed after the crash. I had previously choreographed a fun and energetic program to K-pop music that I was eager to showcase. But after the incident, I became very sad and depressed, and I couldn’t perform to that kind of music. That’s when I decided to choreograph a new program to Balada para un loco. It reflected my emotional state and helped me cheer myself up and enjoy being on the ice again.
What will you take away from this experience?
I’ve realized I still have a lot of work to do to improve my skating skills. I struggled with speed and flow during my freestyle program. Unfortunately, I skated after 2.5 hours of ice use—Free Dance and one group of Bronze Freestyle—so the ice was rough. I had to add extra pushes and steps to gain speed, which made me very tired. I even had to remove a choreographic slide from my sequence because the surface wasn’t smooth enough. Overall, I need to learn how to adapt to poor ice conditions and still maintain flow and speed despite the challenges.
SOFIE – Switzerland
What was the most exciting or emotional moment of this edition of OBI?
For me, the most exciting thing was hearing the crowd while I was skating. It’s such a beautiful moment that motivates you to keep going. The most emotional part was having my fiancé by my side, who helped me a lot beforehand, and having my best friend put me on the ice as my coach.
What will you take away from this experience?
A feeling of being loved and a sense of togetherness with the other skaters who competed. I can’t wait to do it again next year.
ADELE – Italy
KWANKAMON – Germany
What was the most exciting or emotional moment of this edition of OBI?
Rather than a single emotional high, what stood out this year was a uniquely Oberstdorf 2025 moment. For the first time, the competition was held in late June, and the unseasonably warm weather made the rink feel like a sauna. Everyone was joking about how sweaty they were—it became a running theme. After a performance, when we hugged to congratulate each other, someone would inevitably say, “Sorry, I’m so sweaty,” or laugh and suggest a “sweat exchange.”
It wasn’t exactly glamorous, but it perfectly captured the camaraderie and humor of the adult skating community. We were all in it together—sweat and all!
What will you take away from this experience?
One word: Friendship. No matter where we come from, we’re united by a shared love of figure skating. That bond creates something truly special—mutual encouragement, endless laughter, and a deep appreciation for the journey we’re all on, together.
Many thanks to all the skaters who shared their memories with us! @davidechiesadesign @mika.b.w @rico.on.off.ice @emerald_skates_72 @anthony.skatesaroundtheworld @sofiebarnova @cipressoadele @massimo_ice_72 @exoticlachs
